I have been a basketball fan since I was a little girl. Some of my earliest memories are of watching March Madness with my Dad. He had the teams he rooted for and the teams he did not like at all. At that young age, I really did not fully understand the game. All I really understood was that you needed to get the ball in the hoop, but I still loved watching the game with my father, nonetheless. Today, I still watch basketball, but mainly only college basketball. I rarely watch the NBA, except for the Championship. So I am fairly familiar with the game. But there are still some terms and rules that I am not completely clear on, which is why I loved reading by Daniel Yost so much.
No matter if you are a lover of basketball or you have never watched a game in your life, this book is still for you! Not only will it explain every basketball term you have ever heard – it does so with humor while also comparing the game of basketball to this game we all call life. And the book is full of funny and awesome illustrations done by Marvel Banot.
ABOUT THE BOOK
NEVER FOUL A JUMP SHOOTER, A Guide To Basketball Lingo, Lessons and Laughs, began as the author having fun with a few quirky basketball expressions, such as “penetrate and dish” and “a foul waiting to happen.” But then it just kept growing into a humorous look at wonderfully colorful basketball expressions.
But this is not a dictionary. Or a story with beginning, middle and end.
The next time you’re watching a game and you hear an announcer say, “The bank is open,” or a post-game interviewer ask a player, “How big was this win?” and the player answer, “It was huge,” or hear a player “thanking God” after a victory, just open this book, find the term and have a chuckle. Because basketball is about life, and life is better when we can all laugh at ourselves just a little.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Daniel Yost began as a sports writer in Portland, Oregon and thought that was his calling for life. Five years later, he transitioned to freelance journalism. After a while, he took a shot at novel writing. When that didn’t work, he went to Hollywood and found his true calling, writing and eventually directing motion pictures (see www.cascadeskyfilms.com). One film stands out.
Drugstore Cowboy, which he co-wrote, and which won the Independent Spirit Award for its screenplay and also best screenplay of the year by the New York and Los Angeles film critics, the National Society of Film Critics and PEN West International. Drugstore Cowboy was first a novel, written behind bars by the late James Fogle, a gentle spirit with a wry, perceptive view of human nature who also happened to be a habitual drug thief when out of prison. Yost rewrote the novel (uncredited), established a long-standing correspondence and friendship with Fogle, and helped get the novel published and the film made.
Now, finally, comes the sequel, which Yost swore he’d never consider. But he woke up one morning with an idea he couldn’t refuse. Hey, when the universe tosses you a gift (which doesn’t often happen), what are you supposed to do? If that gift triggers the imagination, only a fool tosses it back.
FULL OF HUMOR AND WISDOM
I really enjoyed reading this book. Not only did it remind me of those days of watching basketball with my father, it also taught me a few things about the game that I did not know. And it made me chuckle a few times, too. I still watch basketball with my Dad, but we watch it while we are on the phone together. And now I will be able to teach my Dad a few things about the game that he did not know, thanks to NEVER FOUL A JUMP SHOOTER.
For instance, my Dad has always been confused about the difference between a small forward and a power forward. Daniel Yost explains all of this to you in this book. He explains it so that you can understand it and he does so with humor and wisdom.
I loved reading this book. I love the fact that it taught me a thing or two that I can share with my Dad. I would recommend this book to anyone, basketball fan or not. If you are tired of your hubby watching March Madness every year and you do not understand anything that is going on… maybe you should read this book!
