In a little over a month, Halloween will be here! I am so excited! Halloween is my favorite holiday (though Christmas is a close second!). I love all of the fun decorations, the costumes, the crisp fall air and the candy! Oh yes, the candy! I loved going trick-or-treating when I was a kid, and I love it even more now that I can take my daughter! It is still just as fun as it ever was! But what I really looked forward to, as a kid and as an adult, was the rest of the Halloween weekend. My family and I would curl up somewhere in the living room and watch Halloween movies together! But I’m not going to lie, some of those movies scared me to tears! So now I follow this same tradition with my family. BUT, since my daughter is only 10, we watch Halloween movies that are suitbale for the whole family. And maybe after my daughter goes to bed – my husband and I will watch a scary movie or two, just for fun! But for this post – I give you my top 5 Halloween Movies for the Whole Family! Enjoy!
This is probably my most favorite Halloween movie of all time! Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker are all so excellent as the trio of witches known as the Sanderson Sisters. They are inadvertently brought back to life by a boy, his little sister and his crush in Salem, Massachusetts. This movie came out in 1993, when I was a sophomore in high school and I have loved it ever since! This movie is funny, fun, full of adventure and great music. And it is great for the kids, too!
Best Quote: This cat here, Binx, right? He can talk. My brother’s a virgin: he lit the black flame candle. The witches are back from the dead and they’re after us. We need help.
It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
This is another movie that my family and I watch every year at Halloween! Even if you are not into cartoons, this is such a great movie! Great for the kids, and the whole family. As the Peanuts gang prepares for Halloween, Linus write his annual letter to the Great Pumpkin. Even though no one else believes him and they all go out trick-or-treating, Linus waits patiently in the Great Pumpkin patch! Everyone loves Snoopy Charlie Brown, Sally and Lucy and the gang, right? What’s not to love? If you have not seen it, what are you waiting for?
Best Quote: There are three things that I’ve learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics, and the Great Pumpkin.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
This is another great movie to watch at Halloween! Some parts might be a little spooky for younger kids, but all in all, I think it is a great one for the whole family. It is all about Jack Skellington, also known as the Pumpkin King, and the resident of Halloween Town all gearing up for another Halloween. Only, Jack has grown bored of the same old thing every year. He finds a door to Christmas Town and decides he would like to change things up, but no one in town is for it! This Tim Burton film is amazing!
Best Quote: Just because I cannot see it, doesn’t mean I can’t believe it!
I know that E.T. is not exactly about Halloween, but many of the parts of it involve Halloween and I think it is an amazing movie to watch on the Halloween Holiday! It is fun, adventurous and so sweet! The film is directed by Steven Spielberg and I still believe that it is one of his best movies of all time. Another fun one that the whole family can enjoy!
Best Quote: E.T. phone home.
This movie is about a girl named Marnie questioning why her mother will never let her celebrate Halloween. And she soon realizes that it is because Marnie is really a witch. Then all sorts of adventures begin, like trying to defeat the evil Kalabar. This is such a great film for the whole family and it is a Disney Channel Original Movie! And if you have time, there are 3 sequels to this movie that you should also watch on Halloween!
Best Quote: Being normal is vastly overrated.
So there you have it! My 5 favorite movies to watch on Halloween that the whole family can enjoy! I hope you can experience them all this fun holiday!
