5 Useful Home Maintenance Tips

October 6, 2016 by Mom Does It All 1 Comment

Home owners face a lot of different challenges during a calendar year. Besides the household appliances, there are numerous things you have to keep an eye on. Generally speaking, the elements are the biggest threat as water and sun can adversely affect parts of your home increasing your costs significantly.
Luckily, for us, some of the things are minor problems and should be checked only in case of a breakdown. However, there are some parts of our home that require regular maintenance and repairs. Let’s check out the list.

Refrigerator

If your refrigerator breaks down, you will most definitely notice it. But, the problem arises with the things that we cannot see. One of the biggest issues in that regard is worn down door seal. Having a proper seal is important for keeping the food fresh. On the other hand, if this part of the refrigerator is broken, it will have a negative effect on internal parts of the appliance slowly destroying them. Every refrigerator has cooling coils on its back. They are used to regulate the temperature. If you neglect them, they will lose their power. This is why you will have to clean them regularly. When it comes to brands, we would recommend LG as a company that produces really durable refrigerators.

Bathroom leakages

When it comes to leakages, you always have to pay close attention to your bathroom and everything inside. The issue may arise from practically any corner: washing machine (if you have a washing machine in your bathroom), faucets, toilets, showers. Drains on washing machine are especially troublesome. Puddle may start appearing behind machine without you even realizing. This moisture can then lead to mold growth and potential health risks. This is why you should check its back from time to time and replace any parts that are malfunctioning. A Common issue with toilet is leakage from the tank. If you noticed this, you will have to change flappers. On the other hand, faucets are usually minor problem and they can be easily fixed. You may also notice leaking shower recesses. They can cause a lot of structural damage and they need to be addressed immediately.

Pool maintenance

A lot of home owners have a pool. When it comes to this part of your house there is a completely different set of rules that has to be applied. Pools need to be protected during the winter and you have to clean them regularly. But, one of the biggest issues for home owners is the pump malfunction. This piece of equipment is crucial for filtering the water. Sometimes, you might encounter an issue with its motor which will prevent it from working properly. Leakage is also a potential threat. Because of this, make sure to check your pump regularly. Onga and Davey water pumps are regarded as the most durable and can be a good investment.

Roof and gutters

Upper parts of your home are crucial for preventing any leakage and water damage. While roof protects you from the rain, gutters are a special drainage system meant to direct water, debris and leaves. They are also crucial as a way to prevent damage to concrete. Roof shingles need to be checked regularly for damage. If you notice some issues, make sure to replace the problematic ones. Same goes for gutters. Additionally, gutters need to be cleaned regularly as they may get clogged.

Garage doors

There are two main issues with garage doors: bad springs or bad balance. Springs should be lubricated from time to time to prolong their usage. Nevertheless, you will have to replace them sooner than later. Balance is a different issue. Imbalanced doors can reduce its life span and may lead to injuries. So, to prevent any potential issues, make sure they are working properly.

These are the basic malfunctions you may encounter at your home. However, have in mind that there are numerous things that can go wrong so always be prepared!
