Summer Fashion Progresses by the Month.

July 31, 2013 by Mom Does It All Leave a Comment

It is hot in July and August, no surprise about that at all, but this summer seems to be redefining hot. It has been day after of that melting hot, find an air conditioned room and do not leave it no matter what type heat that really makes the motivation melt away as fast as the sweat beads up on you. The only high point of this type of weather is after a few weeks of it even the fashion police are too overwhelmed to bother interrupting your evening walk around town with glares and sideways glances. Some have chosen to take advantage of this social allowance to explore ways to be cool in the heat during leisure time and set all new rules for acceptable social wear.

Shirts and Tops
As the temperature goes up, so does the distance from a beach where halter tops and loose fitting oversized t-shirt style cover-ups and wraps becomes acceptable for casual wear. While in late May and June wearing a halter top once you step off the sand is taboo by Mid- august it is perfectly acceptable at a café table on the sidewalk in town. Of course if you are going to sit inside, you should still pull on a drop shoulder t-shirt or simple wrap cover-up. Light colors that are more forgiving in the sun are the first choice in afternoons but in even once the sun is not as intense a little brighter and bolder color choice is reasonable.
Loose fitting tops are best for both modesty and comfort. The allow air to move and help avoid the unsightly dark spots from sweating the heat if you were walking or doing any activity. It also allows a plausible denial of “showing off” and simply says you a dressing for the weather.

Shorts and Pants
Obviously shorts and capris are the first choice. Do not be fooled that because a halter top may be allowed to pass unnoticed on a hot afternoon on the street that bathing suit bottoms would be similarly overlooked. Comfortable and loose fitting shorts are not only more comfortable but are more stylish and avoid the disapproving glances. Form fitting, too tight, and too short still screams “looks at me – I am trying too hard”.  Natural cotton is far preferable to spandex and polyester every month regardless of temperature.

Shoes
May says sneakers and sandals acceptable even out in town. By the August heat anything with a heel and extra effort is simply overdoing it for all but late night club wear. A shift from even the restraint and straps of sandals will disappear as summer progresses until simple flip flops are perfectly acceptable. For both style and walking comfort going with molded and padded Havaianas like the styles from Skatehut meet both fashion and comfort criteria.
