If you have decided to go back to school to get your masters degree online, then clearly a little hard work isn’t something that scares you off. This is even truer if you are trying to juggle family life, a job, and your masters. Many students enrolled in online degrees courses such as the masters in CIS at Boston University are in this exact same boat. It can be a tiring and tricky road, but it can be done. In order to help you find that balance between your online CIS degree and your home life, we’ve put together these tips to help you manage your time better.
Learn to Ask for Help
Before you even enroll in the degree program it’s a good idea to talk to your support system – your family and close friends – and let them know you’re going to look to them for help. This means emotional help as well as physical help. It’s important to trust in your support system and then know when it’s time to reach out and ask for help from them.
Learning to ask for help can be difficult, s no-one wants to admit they are feeling overwhelmed, but it can make life so much easier and it allows your support system to feel important and needed. Everyone is helping you to work towards this goal and they can all take pride in the end result when you achieve your degree.
Learn to Prioritize
Often we have this large list of priorities in our head, things we “have” to do. It’s time to take a closer look at these priorities. Are they really all that important? Can some be scratched off the list? This is a good time to re-examine your priorities and put only the very most important things at the top of the list. It is okay to admit you can’t do everything. By admitting it to yourself, you will take all kinds of stress and pressure off your mind.
Recognize the Signs of Stress
While it’s normal to have stress in your life, it shouldn’t be every day, all day long. It’s important to learn to recognize these signs of stress so you can act accordingly and work to rid yourself of it. Signs of stress can include problems sleeping, snapping at those around you, feeling overwhelmed or sad, experiencing a general feeling of moodiness, suffering from stomach upset, headaches, and chest pain.
It’s important you don’t ignore these signs, as they will continue to worsen. You can use a variety of methods to help relieve the stress such as meditation exercises, giving yourself a pep talk, venting to a loved one, exercising, getting more sleep, eating better, increasing your Vitamin D intake, and taking time to do things you enjoy.
Be Your Own Cheerleader
It comes down to being your own cheerleader and learning how to cut yourself a little slack from time to time. While we’d love to be everything to everyone at all times, it’s just not realistic. Striking that perfect balance between your school studies and family takes a conscious effort on your part, but the pay-off is worth it.
